Ukrainian hryvnia Buy: 5.0 / Sell: 12.0 / National Bank rate: 10.57

It is named after the ancient Russian hryvnia, an ancient monetary unit that was a silver ingot. The hryvnia is divided into 100 kopecks (Ukrainian: kopiyka). The ISO 4217 currency code is UAH, and the ISO 4217 code is 980. The official currency symbol is ₴.

After Ukraine declared independence on August 24, 1991, and Ukraine left the USSR, temporary banknotes called "kupon" and denominated in rubles (Ukrainian: karbovanets) were introduced on January 10, 1992. Officially, they were called "karbovanets," but the name "kupon-karbovanets" was also used.

In accordance with Presidential Decree No. 762/96 of L. D. Kuchma dated August 25, 1996, "On Monetary Reform in Ukraine" (published August 29, 1996), the hryvnia was introduced as the currency on September 2, 1996. On September 2, 1996, the exchange of coupon-karbovanets for hryvnia began at a ratio of 100,000 krb = 1 hryvnia. From that day on, banks issued only hryvnia. Until September 16, both karbovanets and hryvnia were accepted for payment everywhere. After that, the exchange could only be made at banks. The exchange procedure continued until 1998.

Currently, banknotes of four series in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 hryvnias are in circulation in Ukraine.
