It is divided into 100 sen (a unit of account, withdrawn from circulation in 1954). International code: JPY. The symbol for the yen is ¥. It was first minted in silver and gold coins between 1869 and 1871.
In 1932, exchange controls were introduced; they are implemented by the Ministry of Finance and the central bank. The issuing institution is the Bank of Japan, founded in 1882, whose capital belongs to the state. In October 1939, the yen left the sterling bloc, setting a rate of 4.2675 yen to the US dollar, which corresponded to the yen's gold content of 0.20813 grams.
The Bank of Japan has the exclusive right to issue banknotes and coins. Banknotes are issued in denominations ranging from 1,000 to 10,000 yen. The Japanese yen was considered the second most important reserve currency for several decades, although its use has declined recently.
