Since at least the 15th century, it has been the common name for the gold ducat. Since 1526, it has been the primary unit of account. Since 1564, it has been the silver coin of the Kingdom of Poland and later of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Since 1924, it has been the national currency of Poland. Until 1995, its ISO 4217 code was PLZ; currently, it is PLN. Initially, the zloty was divided into 30 groszy, equal to half a kopa. Since 1924, it has been divided into 100 groszy.
Banknotes in denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 zlotys are currently in circulation.
